Hansel & Gretel / RS010

We were delighted to be publishing Clive Hicks-Jenkins' first picture book, a reimagining of the Brothers Grimm Hansel & Gretel fairy tale.

Clive Hicks-Jenkins began work on a project in 2012 to create collages for a Hansel & Gretel Alphabet Primer. Intended as a series of silk-screened prints, further explorations of the images took them in another direction, with the artist adapting and then hand-painting them onto a set of enamelware ‘nursery’ plates.

The images have evolved into illustrations for a livre d’artiste, in which he playfully reinvents the traditional tale of the two children lost in a wood. We featured some of these in our second Random Spectacular journal.

Clive Hicks-Jenkins was born in Newport, south Wales, in 1951. The early part of his career was as a choreographer and theatre director, but since the 1990s he has become well known as a painter. He has been praised by critics in The Independent, Modern Painters and Art Review. Simon Callow has called him ‘one of the most individual and complete artists of our time' and Nicholas Usherwood in Galleries has described his work as ‘reflective, expressive painting of the highest order’.
